As most of you know, we, and the Ballantynes, went camping on Frasers over Easter. Fraser Island is the largest sand island in the world. There are no roads and you have to drive along the beach. It's known as The Great Sandy National Park and 75 mile beach and that's exactly what it is.[75 miles long by 30 miles wide] We camped at Dunduburra which is about 70km up the beach. We drove to Inskip Point on the mainland and took a barge across. About 15min sailing. All normal road rules apply to the island and the speed limit is 80km/h and believe me, you can do 180. It's like the Autobaan!!!! You have to time it right because there are places where you cannot pass at high tide and you also have to watch out for "wash-outs" which are caused by streams flowing into the sea from the rain forest, which makes up the interior. What really blew me away was having to pull over for an aeroplane comming in to land on the beach!!!!![check the photos out] Anyway, we got totally rained out and decided to pack up and come home on Saturday. The fishing was also not that good although Jamie caught a big sandshark and Andrew a big ray. The girls were also vey happy about cutting the trip short as they are definately not "happy campers"!!!
Well, we will definately be going back, but this time we are going to rent a house that belongs to a friend of Dave's and can sleep 3 families. The scenery on Frasers is absolutely stunning and Lake Mckenzie has the most crystal clear water and whitest sand I've ever seen. Anyway, check out all the photos. Also check out Dave's blog: ballysdownunder.blogspot.com
